Computing
Our Vision/Intent
At West Bridgford Infant School, we aim to prepare our learners for their future by giving them the opportunities to gain knowledge and develop skills that will equip them for an ever-changing digital world. Knowledge and understanding of ICT is of increasing importance for children’s future both at home and for employment. Our Computing curriculum is underpinned by our ‘Shine Brightly’ themes, where being brave to have a go, being curious and being creative are at the heart of what we do. We are also keen to develop our children’s problem solving and resilience and we do this by supporting children to develop computational thinking skills whilst encouraging them to become safe and responsible users of technology. We want our children to be able to use technology confidently and respectfully to support them in the wider world.
Our Implementation
Computing activities are carefully planned following the National Curriculum in KS1. Our curriculum is built around the three main learning strands: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.
Computer Science: Pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
Information Technology: Pupils learn to use technology to create programs, systems and a range of content.
Digital Literacy: Pupils learn to use technology to express themselves and develop their ideas.
Computing is blocked into half-termly topics and are taught discreetly or as part of our topic work, with links made to other curriculum areas where possible. Children are given access to a variety of hardware and software in order to broaden their knowledge and skills. Our Computing curriculum focuses on a progression of knowledge and skills in digital literacy, computer science, information technology and online safety to ensure that children become competent in safely using, as well as understanding, different technology.
A vital part of the Computing Curriculum is Online Safety. We ensure that Online Safety is taught across all subject areas following the ‘SMART’ rules at all times. We empower our children at West Bridgford Infant School to feel safe and secure when using the internet and know who to turn to for help when needed.
